30 Before 30

I don’t know why, but I had this feeling back in college that I’ll live only until 30. Maybe it was because I had frequent migraine attacks back then (at least twice a week that time), so I was paranoid I might have brain cancer. So on my 20th birthday, I started this list of 30 things to do before I hit 30 (and die).

  1. Maintain my three academic scholarships until university graduation.
  2. Support myself and my family financially (I’m the family breadwinner and was a self-supporting working student.)
  3. Lead my own leadership group (and hopefully make an impact in the lives of other students)
  4. Graduate BS Chemical Engineering as cum laude (Graduated magna cum laude, University of the Philippines Diliman)
  5. Travel to another country before graduating college (for free since I’m broke) (Spent a week in Malaysia during my 5th year in college courtesy of Shell. Everything’s free, of course, as I’m broke.)
  6. Have a job offer even before graduating college (Unilever offered me the Management Trainee/Assistant Manager position before my graduation.)
  7. Provide sufficient capital for my mom to jumpstart her own grocery/feeds business
  8. Become a board/licensure exam top notcher (Placed 6th in the chemical engineering licensure exams while working full-time.)
  9. Work in Chevron as a reservoir engineer (Well, not exactly. Working as a reservoir engineer for Chevron’s competitor.)
  10. Send my siblings to school
  11. Write something that will be published in books or newspapers
  12. Get published in a scientific journal
  13. Start writing a book or blog
  14. Study abroad (Studied as a Fellow in the United Nations University in Reykjavik, Iceland)
  15. Join a competition where I could exhibit my physical skills
  16. Become a guest speaker in school recognition or graduation ceremony
  17. Singapore
  18. South Korea
  19. Travel to any European country (Lived in Iceland for 6 months. Toured 6 countries in Western Europe – France, Italy, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.)
  20. Travel to Brazil or Argentina or any country in Latin America
  21. Spend vacation in Maldives or Caribbean Islands (okay, if this seems too lofty, a vacation in El Nido, Palawan will do. haha!)
  22. Own a condo or house and lot
  23. Own a car (not necessarily top-of-the line)
  24. Sponsor scholarships to poor but deserving students (at least one student by 30)
  25. Experience snow or stand on a glacier
  26. Six-pack abs
  27. Get totally drunk (extra points if I vomit) (Got the extra points)
  28. Travel with siblings abroad to spend a well-deserved vacation.
  29. Experience water rafting, surfing, zip line, ice skating, skiing, sky diving, scuba diving, bungee jumping
  30. Marry a woman who reads. And writes. And travels. And beautiful. And has a good heart. (yeah, with these criteria, I have a feeling I won’t be marrying at all. Too sad.)

  1. I just posted today a list of “29 Things to do before 29”. You gotta live without fear. Best way to push yourself towards something is to write it down, put it out there where others can hold you accountable, and really live the words on the page. Good luck with the rest of your list, I’ve got a Rubik’s Cube to solve ;)

  2. i had a similar list when i was in high school, and i unearthed the physical list when moving house. i was surprised to find that i ticked a lot off without really remembering / trying! it was a great, great feeling ::)

  3. I highly doubt you are going to die, but I bet you develop panic/anxiety attacks. I used to have the same premonition feelings when I was in high school and even in my early twenties. I still sometimes feel like I won’t make it past 30, but here I am at 36. Good luck to you and hey, whatever keeps you motivated.

  4. hahaha dead at 30, I highly doubt it unless you have some chronic disease of some sort ( well most likely your body functions will let you down in your mid 60’s) Kidding aside, great list! keep it up

  5. Hi Gary, haven’t catch up with you lately.. good thing you have a blod and writing,,, hope we can meet or w some of friends when you’re near.,.. message us up! my twit @micuniversity :)) or FB?! hehe

  6. You remind me of myself when I in my early 20s. Now 32 I’ve accomplished more then most my age. (So I thought) You at 25 have blown me out of the ballpark! Awesome job on all you’ve done but remember God wants you to enjoy your life too not work yourself to death!

  7. Wow! I think your standard is attainable… don’t say a thing yet.. maybe you will be meeting your “God’s gift” in the very near future…hahaha! Remember ” bucolic”? She told.me.about your.blog site…. that’s why i able to know you and i now know the reason why she.became a fan.of yours. :)

  8. While looking at your list of goals to achieve before you reach 30, I was actually shocked and amazed at the things that you have achieved and I can’t stop thinking to myself, “IDOL!”. Haha. I’ll be studying in UPD next school year and hopefully, I’ll be taking taking up BS Chemical Engineering. I just can’t help but be amazed by what you have done. I’ll take this as an inspiration to be better at school. And your three academic scholarships? WOW. Just WOW.

P.S. Glad I came across your blog site.
P.P.S. I hope you don’t find this irritating.
